Where are you from? Does English is your native language? I’m Indonesian and I learned English since
I was is 3rd grade of elementary school. It was a bit later than the
other in the city. I live in a village inside a little city anyway. Why
did I learn English? It’s simple.
Because of a song. My brother just came
from his work at that time, and brought me a new CD. Guess it. It was “Scorpions” CD. A classical rock band from England, I guess, ‘cause I don’t
remember it clearly. I liked to listen to a song titled “Still Loving You”. Smartphone was
not created yet around that year, it was around 2002. Thus, my brother wrote
the whole lyrics that displayed on the screen into his note. I sometimes took
that book and sang alone, although I didn’t understand what the meaning of
those words. Just about 2004, I started to looked for the meaning of every word
in dictionary, my sister’s old dictionary, tried to remember each word, and
made my own translation thanked to some knowledge that gave by my elementary
school teacher. The first song I translated by myself was not this Scorpion’s
song, but M2M’s “The Day You Went Away” when I was in 6th grade of
elementary school. It continues ‘till junior high school, whenever I liked an
English song, I would look for the lyrics, and translated it into Indonesian.
It was a one step up when I was in 2nd year of junior high school,
that I tried to understand an English movie’s conversation. The result was, too
annoying. I couldn’t understand any single conversation cleary. So I realized
that I just learned a writing-language, not ever learned a speaking-language. Started
from it, I tried hard to trained myself, both listen and write. It was not just
English I learned. There are Chinese and Japanese. I learned by myself for
these two languages. The Chinese one I got from my friend’s book, and the
Japanese one I got from cartoon (called anime
in Japan). But I didn’t learned them as good as English. I just could speak a
little bit of Chinese, and I forget it now, and for Japanese, I could only
wrote hiragana and katakana, both are Japanese’s
characters. There was one character both Chinese and Japanese uses, that’s kanji that I didn’t learn. It was so
difficult at my level that time. I felt like I was “cheating” from English. =D
I gave up to learned
Chinese just a year after I learned it. But I still wrote Japanese’s character
‘till I graduated from junior high school.
